Naturepedic Finds Roots in Northeast Ohio and Brings Certified Organic Mattresses to the Entire U.S.
Naturepedic’s award-winning and nationally recognized products are firmly connected to Ohio industriousness and creativity. Building organic mattresses and educating consumers on the benefits of healthier materials requires a special workforce blend, one combining talented craftspeople and inspired thinkers willing to research and learn. Naturepedic finds that perfect blend in Northeast Ohio.
Quietly tucked away in an unassuming industrial park in Chagrin Falls lives the Naturepedic headquarters and manufacturing facility, where award-winning certified organic mattresses are designed and shipped throughout the United States and Canada.
Much of the Naturepedic manufacturing process relies on hand crafting, and to that end Naturepedic has enlisted the help of the neighboring Amish communities, who have provided a wealth of talent that would have been difficult, if not impossible, to secure in other areas.
Encompassing seamstresses, woodworkers and other tradespeople, more than 75% of the Naturepedic workforce represents Northeast Ohio’s Amish community.
Naturepedic’s Rich (and Rooted) History
Old fashion craftsmanship is only one part of the Naturepedic equation. Mining a solid talent base found in the Cleveland, Ohio area, Naturepedic has assembled a dedicated and talented core of professionals, including sales, marketing, sustainability and research experts.
A family-run operation, Naturepedic was founded by environmental engineer Barry Cik along with his sons Jeff and Jason. More than 12 years ago, Barry set out to purchase a crib mattress for his first grandchild. Being an environmental engineer familiar with hazardous chemicals, Barry was shocked with the type of materials, including vinyl and chemical flame retardants, found in typical crib mattresses. Looking for a more natural solution, the few products he was able to find lacked waterproofing, putting a baby at risk from issues related to bacterial growth. From that moment on, the idea of Naturepedic was “born” in Ohio.
In the beginning, the company relied on a distribution network of independent baby product stores throughout the United States. Knowledge of and demand for the products was spurred on by a growing base of mommy bloggers and parents seeking healthier products for their babies … and speaking to each other online. The timing was right. Sales of Naturepedic products increased year over year.
Growing Up and Out of Ohio…Without Leaving
While based in Ohio, Naturepedic found that early adopters to the organic non-food trend items could be found in the Hollywood crowd and began building relationships in that community, eventually striking up a relationship with The Environmental Media Association, founded by television icon Norman Lear, Lyn Lear, and Cindy and Alan Horn.
Eventually, Naturepedic expanded from baby products into the organic adult mattress market, and combined with the company’s environmental involvement with West coast-based organizations like the Environmental Media Association and Clean Production Action, opened its first company-owned flagship store in Los Angeles, in the upscale Robertson district near Hollywood.
Naturepedic customers have included singer Nick Jonas, Jessica Alba, musician Herb Albert, Hot in Cleveland star Wendie Malick, and many more.
That celebrity connection created a reciprocal effect, bringing Hollywood to Ohio, so to speak. Naturepedic has entertained various visitors at its facility in Chagrin Falls, including actress Amy Smart and husband Carter Oosterhouse (of HGTV fame), who filmed a short called “A Life Less Toxic” in charming Chagrin Falls. Additionally, Debbie Levin, president of the Environmental Media Association, has also visited Naturepedic more than once.

Naturepedic was founded in 2003 when the Cik family welcomed a new arrival. Barry – the grandfather-to-be – soon realized there were no crib mattresses available without questionable chemicals, potential allergens or hazardous flame retardants. So, with safety in mind, Barry made his own crib mattress. The company has since grown to carry not only organic baby crib mattresses, but also organic kids mattress, organic luxury adult mattress, organic foundations and organic bedding accessories.
