Buh-bye, traditional office!
A 2017 Gallup survey found that 43 percent of Americans spend at least some time working remotely, up from 39 percent in 2012.
Some remote staffers, like me, are set up with home offices complete with double screens and the fastest home wifi, while other remote staffers, also like me, choose to spend much of their remote-work time hunkered down in coffee shops.
As a full-time employee who’s been working remotely since 2011, I cherish my home office space but often get bored or lonely. Thus, I’ve mastered the art of “the coffice,” using a coffee shop as my office – and these are the six spots in Cleveland I’ve identified as my favorites for camping out and cracking down, large soy latte in hand.
The Root, Lakewood
Whether you’re meeting a business partner for a latte and a quick bite or you’re camping out for the long-term and want to ensure that you’ve got easy access to good healthy food, The Root is the right spot for both. Spacious, funky, and fully vegetarian, this Lakewood hotspot also features local artists on the walls and, occasionally, local musicians on the mic. They make all their drink syrups in-house (try the cardamom), and their Sweet Potato Sammy (sweet potato, caramelized onion, vegan cashew cheddar, avocado, and spinach) will fill you up and give you leftovers to take home. Bring in your own mug and get 10 cents off each drink order.

Rising Star Coffee Roasters, Little Italy
There are five Rising Star locations throughout the city, but the one in Little Italy is a particularly perfect place to hunker down and get work done in a friendly, communal spot… with damn good coffee, of course. Sip on one of their many varietals of (Brazil, Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Papua New Guinea – the list goes on) while working from the large, wooden, wraparound bar in the middle of the shop.
2187 Murray Hill Rd., Cleveland, 216-860-4897
Beviamo Cafe, Tremont
Settle into this sunny, spacious spot for a cold brew and follow it up with a smoothie (go for the DK, made with organic peanut butter, banana, and plant-based protein) or one of Beviamo’s many other treats from its 100% vegan kitchen – including seasoned avocado and tomatoes on a Cleveland Bagel and, on Fridays, a selection of vegan sushi. As that ’90s film title goes, though, Must Love Dogs, because this canine-friendly café is visited by leashed pets big and small throughout the workday. If you’re craving their vegan eats from home on a day off, you’re in luck: They also deliver via GrubHub and Uber Eats.
2275 Professor Ave., Cleveland, 216-202-2300
Phoenix Coffee Co., Ohio City
There’s a surprising dearth of coffee shops in Ohio City, but luckily, Phoenix is good enough to stand alone. This hip, brightly lit location offers solo seating for work-alone folks who don’t want to take up larger tables, and their strong coffee will keep you going strong throughout your stay. Later, fill up with a bacon and gruyere croissant or one of their other pastries – but if you want a full meal, you’ll have to head over to West 25th. A word to the wise: Seating is limited and outlets are at a premium, so either get there early or stage a stakeout to be sure you don’t miss out.
3000 Bridge Ave., Cleveland, 216-400-7901
Inspired by European cafes, this old standby next to the bustling Lincoln Park has been serving cold brew, pour-overs, and every kind of coffee drink under the sun since 1990. In nice weather, grab a couture pastry or a bagel sandwich and take a seat on the patio to watch Tremont go by while you work. You’ll be surrounded by old-timers, regulars, and some of the most interesting folks in town, so between conference calls, chat up the table next to you. You never know who you’re gonna meet.
2366 W. 11th St, Cleveland, 216-621-3838
Six Shooter Coffee, Collinwood
If you don’t have much time and don’t need much space, the small but whimsical Six Shooter Coffee in the Waterloo Arts District, with its limited seating, is the perfect spot to take a load off for a bit. Take your pick of their strong coffee, kombucha on tap, and vegan desserts from nearby Poison Berry Bakery.
16021 Waterloo Rd., 216-762-1180
